One of the most enjoyable days out on the Hampshire and Dorset coast is to hop aboard the Mudeford Ferry from Mudeford Quay to Mudeford Sandbank on Hengistbury Head.
The crossing takes just a few minutes but feels like a proper little adventure, with beautiful views across Christchurch Harbour and the colourful beach huts lining the sandbank. Once across, you can explore miles of walking trails around Hengistbury Head Nature Reserve, through heathland, along the coast and up onto the headland for panoramic views across Christchurch Bay.
It’s a favourite destination for walkers, wildlife lovers, families and dog walkers, with plenty of open space to explore. Bikes and pushchairs can also be taken on the ferry, making it an easy way to enjoy the area without taking the car.
When it’s time for a break, The Beach House sits on the harbour side of the sandbank, virtually opposite the ferry jetty. With views across Mudeford Harbour towards Hengistbury Head and Mudeford Quay, it’s a lovely spot for lunch, coffee or an ice cream before continuing your walk or catching the ferry back.
You can also reach the Beach House from the Hengistbury Head car park on foot, by bike or, during the summer season, aboard the popular Hengistbury Head land train.
Back at Mudeford Quay, you’ll find harbour views, cafés, seafood stalls and plenty of space to stop and watch the boats coming and going.
