There’s something special about Barton-on-Sea at first light. While many South Coast beaches become bustling later in the day, the coastal clifftop path at sunrise is wonderfully quiet. It’s a chance to enjoy the coast before the day properly gets going, with fewer people around, cool sea air and the sound of the waves below.
From 3 The Dome, you can be on the Barton-on-Sea coastal clifftop path within minutes. Head east towards Milford on Sea, walking in the direction of the rising sun, with Christchurch Bay opening out in front of you. The sea stays on your right for much of the route, while the golf course and open countryside sit to your left.
As the sun rises, the light changes across the water and the distant horizon slowly comes into view. On a clear morning, you can look across towards the Isle of Wight and The Needles, which can catch the warm orange glow of the early morning sun. It’s a particularly peaceful time to enjoy one of the best coastal views around Barton-on-Sea.
There is usually plenty to watch along the way. Seabirds move across the cliffs and shoreline, fishing boats can often be seen working further out in Christchurch Bay, and you may spot sailing boats, jet skis or larger ships moving across the horizon. Seals are also occasionally seen offshore, so it is worth keeping an eye on the water as you walk.
Below the cliffs, Barton’s shingle beach runs alongside the route. At lower tides, areas of sand can appear between the shingle, giving the coastline a completely different feel. Depending on the tide and conditions, you may be able to spend part of your walk down by the shoreline before returning to the clifftop path.
Continue towards Milford on Sea and the surroundings gradually become even more open, with uninterrupted views across the coast and countryside. There is no need to rush. This is the sort of walk that is best enjoyed slowly, stopping occasionally to take in the view or simply enjoy how quiet the South Coast can feel early in the morning.
Once you reach Milford on Sea, stop for a coffee or breakfast before making the return journey back towards Barton. Alternatively, you don’t have to walk the full route at all. Even 20 or 30 minutes along the coastal clifftop path is enough to enjoy the fresh sea breeze, sunrise and open views.
